I am The Executor of an Estate and Entitled to a Fee should I take my Fee?

YES! YES! YES!

Being an executor is a big job. You probably had to deal with a lot—like handling someone’s belongings, organizing paperwork, talking to lawyers, and maybe even solving family disagreements. It takes a ton of time and effort, and you deserve to be paid for your hard work!

How Much Should You Get?

- Sometimes, the will says how much the executor should be paid.

- If not, each state has rules for how to calculate the fee.

Some use the Johnson Schedule as a Guideline

•5% on the first $300,000

•4% on the next $300,000

•3% on the next $2.4 million and so with decreasing percentages for larger portions of the estate

Things to Think About:

1. Talk to Your Accountant** – The money you get as an executor might be taxed differently than money you inherit. Your accountant can help you decide what’s best.

2. You’re in Charge** – Even if other family members have opinions, it’s your decision. You did the work, so you deserve the pay.

3. No Guilt Needed** – If you feel bad taking the fee, remember: it’s not wrong to be paid for your time. You could even donate some to charity if you want!

But What If…?

- My brother says I shouldn’t take it."** → Too bad—it’s your choice!

- My sister helped me."** → Maybe use the fee to treat yourselves to something nice!

- I don’t feel right taking it."** → That’s okay, but talk to your accountant first.

Bottom line? Take the fee. You earned it! And after all that work, you might even deserve a vacation—maybe somewhere sunny with a cold drink in hand! 😎
